'Otsu' and Other Poems by Ruth O'Toole with illustrations by Etsuko Manogue LOOK INSIDE |
Otsu was the legendary lover of Japan's greatest swordsman, Miyamoto Musashi. Musashi left her behind as he embarked on a quest for the spiritual purity befitting a samurai. The poem Otsu is her lament.
Erupting with passion and sumptuous imagery reminiscent of the poetry of Pablo Neruda, Otsu is not only a love poem, but also a reflection on contemporary Western culture, in which the ideals of truth and conviction have been muffled by an Eastern relativism. The shorter, more formal poems which follow Otsu are quiet yet powerful aftershocks, echoing her ascent--or collapse--into nothingness. |
